No 'danger' to Nokia India staff

Clear and transparent communication from the top levels of both companies, post the September 2 announcement of Microsoft's intent to buy Nokia's handset business, helped allay fears and uncertainty among the Finnish device maker's staff and customers in India.

"(Nokia's) Stephen Elop and (Microsoft's) Steve Ballmer's communication on how it was a win-win deal for both the companies and how we all had to continue focusing on our work was very clear. We were told the exact position in as many words and given a set of dos and don'ts," P Balaji, Nokia's India head told ET.

Breaking his silence on how Nokia's employees and partners took to the $7.2-billion deal news, Balaji said it was a critical moment for the entire team but the anxiety among employees and partners that logically followed the announcement was soon put to rest. "We were told that the likely regulatory approvals would come in the following quarters into 2014, and among the 'don'ts', we had been asked to not start to think too much ahead of the time and to continue working as two separate units until the approvals came in," he said. The companies expect the deal to close in the first quarter of 2014.

"There was no mixing up, and no, thankfully no confusion," Balaji said. The company spent the following days on reaching out to its partners. 'We reached out to our partners — over 400 in distribution and close to 5,000 partners — and explained the details of the deal and how it was only for the better," Balaji said, explaining how the company was able to allay concerns and ensure handset sales weren't hurt by the news.

Himanshu Chakravarti, chief executive of The Mobile Store, India's largest modern trade mobile phone seller, separately said he saw the announcement early morning, and soon after, received a call from the top management of Nokia India to explain to him the contours of the deal and how supply won't be affected at all. "I was satisfied."

Nokia has long slipped from its leadership position in the Indian market, as global rivals Samsung, Apple and Sony and home grown players such as Micromax sped past it. However, piggybacking on its Lumia range of phones, Nokia's sales have picked up in recent times. It managed to retain its market share in the July-September period after witnessing a sharp fall in the fourth quarter last year, according to IDC.

Vipul Mehrotra, a 16-year veteran at Nokia and currently the company's director and head of smart devices for India, Middle East and Africa, described the Microsoft deal as "an emotional moment".

"I was at Riyadh and a day before the announcement, the news was broken to us. I had to meet a team from Microsoft the next day and my mind was flooded with a number of questions, especially on how I would explain this to my team," Mehrotra said.

"In the next six weeks we were able to ensure that there was no loss of sales," he said. He added that both companies continue to function as two separate independent units until the integration is complete. An impediment to the smooth integration of the two companies in India was removed when the Delhi High Court last week allowed Nokia to sell its Chennai factory to Microsoft, asking income-tax authorities to revoke the freeze on the handset maker's assets.

TastyKhana launches Google map feature for website

Foodies can ensure that spelling mistakes and location misdirection don't delay their food orders placed online now. TastyKhana.com, Pune-based online food portal, has unveiled its new search feature engine powered by Google Map to facilitate easier and convenient food ordering experience for users. Keeping in mind the growing trend in online food ordering, the company has revamped the search process wherein the user needs to only type in his/her location and TastyKhana will figure out where the food needs to be delivered from!

The Google map feature enables the portal to extract the geographical location (address) of the user. The entire system is based on address, including latitude, longitude. The moment users select their location, the system calculates the distance of the restaurant to the user's address and provides a more accurate listing of restaurants that will guarantee delivery to the user's location. This differentiated feature enables users to now narrow their search to their street, to get a list of restaurants that deliver to them.

"We realise that customers get online to TastyKhana.com, not only for the large selection of restaurants available, but also for the ease of ordering. The Google search feature is going to further make food ordering as effortless as possible," said CEO and founder Shachin Bhardwaj.

Sheldon Dsouza, CTO and cofounder said, "This feature is the most advanced technology and the first time anyone has ever offered such a service in India. The search brings to the users, abundant food restaurants options which can deliver the food to them. All these options are available through a single selection of location by the user."

How to modify or remove your online presence

Applying for a new job? Maybe you're about to tie the knot! You may have several reasons for removing certain parts or all of your online presence from websites and search engines. ET shows you how:

Facebook

Removing Individual Posts

You can remove individual status updates/comments by clicking the drop down arrow on the top right corner of your update and selecting delete. For photographs posted by you, open the image, click on Options and select "Delete This Photo''.

It becomes tougher when you want to delete a photo uploaded by someone else. In most cases, a friendly removal request to the uploader should work. If not, open the image, click options and select Remove/Report Tag. A pop-up box will guide you.

Delete The Account

By default, Facebook does not give you the option to delete your account completely. Instead, you can deactivate your account by going to Settings > Security. Deactivating the account hides you profile and prevents people from find you. However, if you choose to join back, your account will get reactivated when you login with the same username and password as before. To completely delete your Facebook account, you need to fill out an online form. Facebook gives you the option to download a copy of your info to your computer before you do this. Login to your Facebook account and open www. facebook.com/help/delete_account.

LinkedIn

Sign in to Linkedin and from Account & Settings select Privacy & Settings. Scroll down and click on the Account section — here, on the right side, you will see the option to "Close your Account". Linkedin will ask for a reason for the account closure request and once you submit a reason your account will be removed. Keep in mind that once you delete your Linkedin account, your entire profile, all your connections and all recommendations will be removed. Linkedin advises that your public profile which is visible via a search engine, might take a few days to disappear.

Google

A Google account not only offers access to Gmail but various other services including maps, calendar, Google+, YouTube, Picasa and so on. Your Google account is also intricately linked with your Android phone (and it includes details of any apps you have purchased from the Play Store — deleting an account means that any paid apps will be forfeited. If you want to dowmload any of those paid apps again, you will have to pay again).

If you want to remove your account completely, head to your Google Account (http://accounts. google. com) and click on Data Tools. On this page, in the Account management section, you get option to delete just your Google+ profile, your entire Google account and other associated services/products. You could also choose to remove specific products. If you or someone else accidentally deletes your account, Google allows you to restore everything for a limited time (unspecified) after deletion.

Twitter

Your Tweets

If you go to www. twitter.com and sign in (as opposed to third-party apps or phones), you'll see a delete button near each tweet you send. If you're using third-party apps, browser extensions or add-ons to tweet, you may have to look for delete option. However, no matter where you tweet from, the delete button on twitter.com will remain.

Delete The Account

Removing a Twitter account is simple — head to www. twitter.com/settings/account and sign-in to your account. Scroll to the bottom and click on 'Deactivate my Account'. On the page that opens, click on the Deactivate button. Keep in mind that Twitter first disables your account for 30 days. If you login to your account within 30 days, the account will be reactivated.

Search Engine Results

Tougher Than You Think

Removing search results are tricky. Search engines only point to content from various websites. This means that even if you manage to remove a search result, the content on the website will still remain — searchable by other search engines like GigaBlast or Volunia. Luckily, Google offers several help pages and tips on how to remove unwanted search results, photos and other personal information.

A Google section called 'Manage your online reputation' will guide you. In case of Bing, search for 'Bing Content Removal Tool' while Yahoo provides an online form for the same. According to comScore, Google, Yahoo and Microsoft remain the largest English search engines — so if you successfully manage to remove content from these three, most of your work is done.

Don't hesitate to directly contact the search engines when you want to take down your copyright content, if you find your financial information (like credit card numbers) or content that personally defames you.

Justdelete.me

Apart from the popular ones, you may have also registered with several other websites over the years (for newsletters, online shopping or even to post a comment). Head to www. justdelete.me to instantly find out how hard it is to delete your account with them — green labels are the easiest, red are hard and the black labelled websites have accounts that cannot be deleted. One of the tools available on the site is a fake identity generator — especially useful for random websites that require all sorts of info like birthdate, address and user description.

Accountkiller.com

At www. accountkiller.com, you can get to-the-point instructions on how to remove your account and/or public profile from many popular websites, blogs and networks. It's all listed alphabetically but you can also search for the ones you want. In most cases, they also provide a direct link that provides more info on account deletion or a simple 'Delete Account' button. Everything is free and you don't need to sign up with account killer either.

But You Cannot Delete

News Articles/Interviews

If your name has been mentioned in a news article or in an interview on a website/blog, it cannot be removed unless you have been quoted incorrectly.

Comments

Reviews/comments on a website's comment section cannot be deleted by you. You can request the admin to remove them, but they are unlikely to comply without a good reason.

Photographs

Photos posted online by someone else (friends, family or colleagues) in which you are visible, cannot be removed by you. You can 'un-tag' yourself in certain cases though.

High-tech Santa Claus visits Indian IT companies

Companies are playing Santa and spreading the holiday cheer among their staff and communities.

"We are doing a make-a-wish initiative for 73 children who shared their wishes with me when I visited them recently. Our Gurgaon team will spend a day with the children. Each of us will choose a child and fulfill her wishes. We will place the gifts under a Christmas tree. And, yes, I will dress up as Santa," said Nikhil Arora, MD of Intuit India.

Yahoo held a big year-end party last week that included its over 2,000 employees and their families at the KTPO convention centre in Whitefield. "The UberSleigh and our team of elves will land up at your home or office to pick up your donations. We will collect books, clothes, woollens, stationery, sports equipment, old or new; but in good usable condition," said Bhavik Rathod, GM of Uber Bangalore.

Wikipedia to make debut at Kolkata Book Fair

Wikipedia, the world's largest multilingual free internet encyclopedia, is set to make its debut at the 38th International Kolkata Book Fair beginning here Jan 29, its organisers said Wednesday.

Wikipedia will launch a campaign during the fair to sign-up volunteers who can contribute to enrich its Bengali link (Banglapedia) database, besides the mother site.

"In order to develop the Bengali link, they need volunteers who can contribute to its database...they have very few Bengali articles," Tridib Chatterjee, secretary, Publishers and Booksellers Guild, told IANS.

The representatives will be present through the 12 days of the fair during which workshops would be held demonstrating the procedure to edit existing articles.

"The Wikipedia stall will occupy a prime spot in the fair," said Chatterjee.

Nasscom helps four startups to raise funds

IT body Nasscom has helped four startups raise funding of Rs 40 lakh as part of its programme to help entrepreneurs turn their ideas into successful businesses.

Four start ups -- Boutline, Imly, Drawtime and Routo -- raised Rs 10 lakh each as part of Nasscom's on-the-spot funding event for pre-revenue companies, Nasscom said in a statement.

Eight pre-revenue companies were shortlisted from the applications received for the 10,000 Startups programme, which pitched their business ideas to a panel comprising of 10 investors.

Boutline offers event audience engagement app, while Routo has a suite of location sharing apps for business listings and location tracking.

Drawtyme has a mobile video platform for teachers to share interactive videos with students and Imly offers a marketplace of home-cooked delicacies.

Under the Smart Capital, Nasscom's 10,000 Startups and Microsoft Venture with the support of Mumbai Angels have developed the on-the-spot funding model to help prototypes get the backing of angel investors who invest about Rs 5-10 lakh in them for the same percentage points of equity.

Under the format, very early stage startups pitch for about five minutes to a panel of investors and post the pitch, those who are interested pool together to pitch in Rs 5-10 lakh of funding.

These companies also receive mentoring and connections as well.

"The real value these companies would receive is in form of the mentoring and connections they would get access to through the respective investors," Nasscom 10,000 Startups Senior Director Rajat Tandon said in a statement.

This also gives tremendous confidence to those who aspire to startup shortly and that there exists a support structure for them as they take the plunge, he added.

Nasscom had started the 10,000 Start-ups program with the support of Google, Kotak, Microsoft and Verisign.

The programme received 3,000 applications for its phase II and now aims to support the shortlisted companies with funding, acceleration, mentoring and industry connects.

India has a decent mix of seed and venture capital investors but enormous thrust is required on the post prototype stage investments.
