After BMW, Audi; Mercedes may hike prices next week

After BMW, Audi; Mercedes may hike prices next weekCoimbatore: Luxury car major Mercedes-Benz India may take a decision next week on increasing prices of its models to offset the rise in input costs following the rupee's depreciation, the company said on Friday.

The matter has been considered over the past few months and a decision will probably be announced by next week, Eberhard H Kern, managing director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, told reporters here.

He refused to divulge the quantum of increase.

Earlier this month, the BMW group said it will increase prices across models, including the Mini, by up to 5 per cent amid higher import costs due to the declining rupee. German luxury car maker Audi had said on July 10 it would hike prices in India by up to 4 per cent.

Mercedes-Benz India plans to alter its strategy of purchasing and sourcing in India, considering the local
currency's depreciation, said Mr Kern, who was here for the launch of the E 63 AMG 5.5L and the opening of a showroom.

The company has increased its investment to Rs. 850 crore in its plant in Chakan, Pune, and plans to double capacity from the present 10,000 units by the year end.

On the launch of the compact sports utility vehicle or SUV, Mr Kern said the GLA would be showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show this year and will be brought to India next year.

BMW faces import duty probe, possible fine: report

BMW faces import duty probe, possible fine: reportFrankfurt: German carmaker BMW faces a fine of at least $100 million euros in India for alleged violations of import rules, WirtschaftsWoche reported.

India's customs office claims that BMW has for years declared imported car parts as part of larger assemblies rather than as separates, paying lower import duties than it should have as a result, the German weekly magazine said.

Customs authorities have imposed a fine of at least $100 million, which could grow further in a second stage, WirtschaftsWoche said, without specifying where it obtained the information.

It said BMW has appealed the decision.

A spokesman for the carmaker said an investigation was ongoing and the company was cooperating with the authorities. He declined to comment on the status of the probe.

Indian customs authorities were not immediately available for comment on Saturday.

EcoSport, Figo set to cost more as Ford India hikes prices by up to 5%

EcoSport, Figo set to cost more as Ford India hikes prices by up to 5%New Delhi: Auto maker Ford India today said it has hiked prices by 1-5 per cent of different models with immediate effect to offset rising input costs.

"Effective September 5, 2013, the prices will be increased in the range of 1 per cent to 5 per cent across majority of Ford's products depending on specific model and trim," Ford India said in a statement.

The company, however, did not disclose the details. Ford India's popular models in India include compact car Figo, sedan Fiesta and the recently launched compact sport utility vehicle EcoSport.

The Figo is priced between Rs. 3.91 lakh and Rs. 6.08 lakh, while the EcoSport is priced between Rs. 5.59 lakh and Rs. 9.37 lakh. Fiesta is priced between Rs. 7.46 lakh and Rs. 10.30 lakh (all ex-showroom Delhi).

The revision in prices is due to consistently rising input costs as a result of macroeconomic factors including high inflation, high interest rates, and the depreciating rupee, the company said.

"Input costs have been consistently increasing and this is expected to continue for the foreseeable future.

Although we have absorbed increases in costs over the past period, the situation is such that we now need to revise the prices of our vehicles," Ford India executive director (marketing, sales and service) Vinay Piparsania said.

Last month, German luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz had hiked prices of its entire range in India by up to 4.5 per cent from September 1 to partly offset the impact of rupee depreciation and higher import duties.
General Motors India had also hiked the price of its three models by up to Rs. 10,000 from the first week of September.

Earlier, BMW group had also hiked price of its products across models, including the Mini, by up to 5 per cent. In July, Audi had also hiked prices across its models in India by up to 4 per cent.

The rupee has been weakening against other currencies, especially the US dollar for a prolonged period. It has weakened 20 per cent against the dollar since April, pushing up import and input costs.

cosport to arrive in 2013, among 8 new cars in coming years: Ford

Ecosport to arrive in 2013, among 8 new cars in coming years: FordChennai: Aiming to be a strong player in the Indian automobile market, US auto major Ford today said its plan to introduce eight new products by middle of this decade was "on track", with the mini-urban SUV "EcoSport" to be unveiled in 2013 being part of it.

"Though the leaders have changed, base plan has not changed. We anounced that eight new products will be introduced around the middle of the decade. We are well on track (towards it)", Jogindar Singh, who will take charge as the new President and Managing Director of Ford India from December 1, told reporters here. Singh will replace Michael Boneham, who was heading the Indian subsidiary of Ford for the last five years.

He said the launch of company's compact hatchback "Figo had been a "gamechanger" for the company. "We are on track (for launching our products) and proof of that is the EcoSport which we expect it to be another gamechanger." Singh said the mini-sub four metre urban SUV would be launched from the company's Maraimalai Nagar plant next year. "We have invited Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for launching it and she has graciously accepted it," he said.

Stating that Asia-Pacific region is poised for exponential growth, Singh said the company expects 70 per cent of business would be contributed from this region.

"My responsibility is to bring the best of Ford Motor Company to Ford India," he said, adding, most of the eight products for launch would be in the small car segment. He said the company's Sanand facility in Gujarat was "on track" and expected to be commence operation by 2014.

Singh said Boneham, who was also present at the event, had created a "strong foundation" for Ford and his challenge was to fill the "big shoes". "We have to continue to grow at a very fast rate," he said. As part of expanding Ford's presence in India, Singh said they planned to double touch points to 250 within one year.

"The plan is to double the touchpoints to 500 this decade. We want to go closer to customers in Tier II and III (locations)," he said, adding that 40 per cent of growth comes from such areas. Boneham said the "interest rates" were still higher and was having a significant impact on business.

Ford India reported a marginal increase in total sales at 10,948 units in Oct 2012. The company sold 10,906 units in the same month last year.
