Securing corporate data: Challenges and solutions

Growth in technology is something which is never stationary – primarily because of the number of applications (web and mobile) and software/ hardware updates, which comes out in the market. As a result, the way people work is also rapidly changing. The moment someone gets comfortable with one set of apps or software, there is a new update or something new to install in a device. This not only poses problems to employees and organisations, but also challenges the IT professionals – those who are responsible for overseeing these changes.

Despite these road blocks, corporate and young professionals easily catch up with the new set of technologies – mostly because these changes also mean improvement in mobility and work productivity. It’s no longer about a 9-5 job in front of a desktop computer, employees now believe in having more flexibility and freedom to work from remote locations. Technology advancements can allow these professionals to become more mobile and therefore, more resourceful for the organisation.

Google extends GOSF on overwhelming response from shoppers

Technology giant Google extended its mega event, Great Online Shopping Festival (GSOF) by a day after getting a huge response from shoppers with over a million users visiting the site in the first 24 hours.

The second edition of India's GOSF, which started yesterday, will now go on till Saturday instead of Friday.

E-commerce firms said even the initial problems faced by the GOSF site on its launch day has not doused the enthusiasm of the online shoppers and they are witnessing growing numbers on their platforms.

"GOSF is getting an overwhelming response from shoppers, despite a minor glitch we faced yesterday and to keep up the tempo and give more time to shoppers, we are extending GOSF by a day and will now run till December 14," Google India Industry Director e-commerce Nitin Bawankule told PTI.

GOSF's first editon last year witnessed over a million people visiting the site, but this time that number has already been surpassed, he added.

"The popularity can be gauged by the fact that Tata Value Homes sold 22 flats (housing units) and 3 cars have also been sold," Bawankule said.

GOSF's website faced issues on the launch day yesterday as the homepage of the website failed to redirect users to the intended pages.

"We're so sorry for the delay in the #GOSF launch. The site will be up soon and you can shop through the deals being offered until 13th Dec (sic)," Google India said in a tweet yesterday.

Despite the initials hiccups, e-commerce firms said that they are experiencing huge response from shoppers. Over 200 partners (e-commerce firms) are participating in the event.

"GOSF 2013 has started off with a blast on Snapdeal. We have seen 10x increase in sales as compared to last year," Snapdeal.com VP(Marketing) Sandeep Komaravelly said.

Similarly, Jabong Co-founder Manu K Jain said from the first day Jabong is seeing a phenomenal increase in traffic and sales.

"Revenue has increased 4-5 times more than a usual day. Coping up with the increasing traffic our IT team is working very hard to keep the website from crashing," he added.

Myntra CEO Vikas Ahuja said: "we are seeing very positive results so far on Day 1. Our traffic has grown approximately 2 times, and revenue growth is 3.5 times, versus the preceding few days."

eBay India eCommerce Evangelist Deepa Thomas said that last year the site witnessed a significant jump in first time buyers during the online shopping fest, which is eBay's key expectation this year too.

Revealed! Microsoft CEO's biggest mistake

Microsoft's outgoing CEOSteve Ballmer has opened up about his biggest regrets during his 13-year tenure in the company.

His short answer was 'Longhorn', the repeatedly delayed and ultimately recast operating system that finally was released as Windows Vista in January 2007.

According to ZDNet, Ballmer said he considered it one of four defining moments of a good part of his CEOship.

During a sit-down interview to tech journalist Mary Jo Foley for Fortune, He talked about his role in key Microsoft events as CEO, from bringing the Xbox to the living room, to taking care of countless anti-trust lawsuits, to taking responsibility for the Longhorn fiasco.

Ballmer said that the most he regretted was not just his CEOship but his whole time here, it's absolutely 'Longhorn becomes Vista.'

That was the single biggest mistake he made, Ballmer said.

Ballmer said he personally takes responsibility for the situation.

With Longhorn, Microsoft started out with the wrong technology approach, the wrong focus by the company's tech leadership and the wrong cadence.

Longhorn kind of fell through the cracks. Ballmer admitted that it was not Bill Gates' thing and it was not former Windows Chief Jim (Allchin's thing but he did not get it.

He said that looking back he realises that it was sort of a focus issue, because they were not focusing on what they needed for engineering cadence, bite-size approach.

Ballmer said he's feeling good about where the company is right now with the Xbox One.

Sony unveils pen drives for smartphones, tablets

Eyeing a new market for data storage devices, Sony has launched the world's first pen drives compatible with smartphones and tablets. The new flash drives are "2-in-1 devices" with both USB 2.0 and microUSB connectors, allowing buyers to use them in laptops and desktops as well as smartphones and tablets.

Viviano Cantu, director of consumer media marketing, Sony Electronics, said, "These new drives combine convenience, peace of mind and performance and are perfect for mobile multi-tasking."

The new drives are compatible with Android (Ice Cream Sandwich to Jelly Bean) operating systems and offer USB on-the-go (OTG) functionality. Sony says that it is working on making them compatible with Android 4.4 (KitKat), the latest version of Google's mobile operating system.

Apart from copying data between devices, these flash drives can be used to as additional or temporary storage for smartphones and tablets.

Their locking caps (available in three colours) will protect the connectors from damage, dust and debris, says Sony. The metal body of the flash drives is durable enough to withstand everyday mobile use, it claims.

Sony has said that the new flash drives will be available in of 8, 16 and 32 GB capacities, priced at $19.99, $29.99 and $62.99. While the Japanese manufacturer has not announced their India launch date, it has said that the flash drives will hit global markets in January next year.

Angry Birds Go! is here

Angry Birds Go!, Finnish developer Rovio's new kart racing game, is now available as a free download on iOS, Android, Windows Phone 8 and BlackBerry 10 platforms.

First teased in June, the game features all the characters from the original Angry Birds games, this time racing their way through the Piggy Island in 3D through speedways, canyons, stunt roads and air courses in soapbox carts.

The gameplay is extremely simple with the ability to control the kart with tilt or touch after releasing the kart with the help of the catapult, in true Angry Birds tradition.

The game offers over 50 soapbox karts to choose from, and players can upgrade them by collecting bird coins or making in-app purchases. Talking of in-app purchases, the game has been criticized for going overboard on these, as things like power-ups, kart upgrades and even reenergizing costs virtual or real money. Players would need to either collect and earn virtual currency or pay for it in real one if they wish to progress in the game.

Rovio usually releases paid games with free versions that feature limited levels and functionality, however, this is the first time that it has released a free game on all platforms, monetizing heavily through in-app purchases.

Angry Birds Go! also features an element of augmented reality, offering players the ability to transport Hasbro's TELEPODS live figures to the game by scanning them through the device's camera.

The game is similar to kart racers like Super Mario Kart and Crash Nitro Kart.

Rovio says that it will be bringing in new content and gameplay improvements with future updates and will also add local and online multiplayer capability in the spring of 2014.

Internet of Things to grow 30-times by 2020: Gartner

ImageThe Internet of Things (IoT) will grow to 26 billion units by 2020, representing an almost 30-fold increase from 0.9 billion in 2009, as per IT research and advisory firm Gartner.

The Internet of Things is the network of physical objects that contain embedded technology to communicate and sense or interact with their internal states or the external environment.

The IoT product and service supplier, which excludes PCs, tablets and smartphones will generate incremental revenue exceeding $300 billion, mostly in services, in 2020. It will result in $1.9 trillion in global economic value-add through sales into diverse end markets.

"The growth in IoT will far exceed that of other connected devices. By 2020, the number of smartphones tablets and PCs in use will reach about 7.3 billion units," said Peter Middleton, research director at Gartner.

"In contrast, the IoT will have expanded at a much faster rate, resulting in a population of about 26 billion units at that time," he added.

Gartner expects the "ghost" devices with unused connectivity to be common owing to the low cost of adding IoT capability to consumer products.

In addition, enterprises will make extensive use of IoT technology. There will be a wide range of products sold into various markets, such as advanced medical devices, factory automation sensors and applications in industrial robotics, sensor motes for increased agricultural yield, and automotive sensors and infrastructure integrity monitoring systems for diverse areas, such as road and railway transportation, water distribution and electrical transmission.

"By 2020, component costs will have come down to the point that connectivity will become a standard feature. This opens up the possibility of connecting; very simple to the very complex, to offer remote control, monitoring and sensing," said Mr. Middleton.

"Today, many categories of connected things in 2020 don't yet exist. As product designers dream up ways to exploit the inherent connectivity that will be offered in intelligent products, we expect the variety of devices offered to explode."

Emerging areas will witness rapid growth of connected things. IoT will also facilitate new business models such as usage-based insuranceother than supporting a large range of health and fitness services, connected sensor and generic technologies.

Instagram unveils private photo-sharing, messaging feature

ImagePhoto-sharing service   Instagram unveiled a new feature on Thursday to let people send images and messages privately, as the Facebook-owned company seeks to bolster its appeal among younger consumers who are increasingly using mobile messaging applications.
